VUB participates in EU Day in China

The VUB and its partners in the Brussels Academy of China and European Studies (BACES) jointly participated in an EU Day event hosted by Yunnan Normal University in the city of Kunming on May 9. The four partners in BACES, the VUB, Renmin University of China, Fudan University in Shanghai and Sichuan University in Chengdu all provided speakers at the event which was held to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of formal diplomatic relations between the EU and China. The event gave an opportunity for over 300 students in Kunming, the provincial capital of Yunnan Province, to learn about the EU, and the relationship it has with China.

The plenary session of the conference was chaired by Li Lishen, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages at Yunnan Normal University, and Duncan Freeman representing BACES. Speakers in the session were Shi Jian, Jean Monnet Professor at Sichuan University on the history of the EU, Song Xinning, Jean Monnet Professor at Renmin University on EU-China relations, Ding Chun, Jean Monnet Professor at Fudan University on the causes, policy remedies and prospects for the European debt crisis, and Duncan Freeman on the EU-China economic relationship. The afternoon session were divided into two groups, In one there were presentations from Profs Wang Yamei and Zhang Chongfu, both from Sichuan University, on the economic, political and cultural significance of the euro and on the role of religion in the development of the EU. While in the second session Prof Fang Lexian of Renmin University discussed EU cultural diplomacy in relation to China and Prof Li Zhuyu the mutual perceptions of Chinese and European youth.
