Belgium was delighted to receive the Chinese President H.E. Mr. Xi Jinping and some very important Chinese delegations. The President started out with meetings on politics and economics at the European Institutions in Brussels. Meanwhile a Chinese academic delegation from Renmin University of China, Sichuan University, Fudan University, Northwestern Polytechnical University and representatives from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) and Huawei Technologies came to the VUB campus in Etterbeek to sign essential collaboration agreements. On this event also the Flemish Minister of Education Pascal Smet, Mr. Geoffroy Clerckx from the Brussels Capital Region and Mr. Paul Dujardin from Bozar art center were present.

In the afternoon President Xi Jinping and a Chinese delegation went to the Egmont palace. Most members of the Belgian government and other important captains of industry were present there. Next to vice Prime ministers Reynders, De Crem and De Croo we found CEOs from Bekaert and Recticel there, but also our very own Rector Paul De Knop and Vice Rector Jan Cornelis.

Following a meeting of the Chinese President and Belgian’s Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo, some prestigious contracts were signed in their presence. VUB was invited by the officials to sign a ‘Preferred International Partnership’ with the Chinese Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU). This agreement implies a collaboration between the institutions on 3 levels: education, exchange of knowledge and societal development.

The contract was signed by Rector Paul de Knop (VUB) en President WANG Jinsong (NPU). Later on the VUB delegation also joined the official dinner at the Royal Palace.
